I'm still not sure what is an optimal setting for a target size of 8gb.

What do you intend playing it back on? A PC or a set top player? What format? AVCHD or DVD data? I back up my BD discs to MKV with AC3 audio, with a ~8GB size, but they are only intended for computer playback.

I just stream from my server to my HTPC - nothing else. So 5.1 AC3 448 is the profile you use?

Actually, I use AC3 640Kbps, six channel with a sampling rate of 48KHz. Makes about a 450 - 700MB audio filesize, depending on the running time. A similar file in DTS format is about 900MB. I use the same MKV file for my video server. The DL DVDs are the backup for it.
