I taped a TV science program, on DVD, and managed to drag it onto my video folder (VTS_01_7.VOB), and I can play it with the VLC media player.
I want to trim it with VideoDub, and, for that, need to convert the .vob to .avi. "convertvobtoavi" doesn't seem to work.
Eventually, I'd like to burn it on another DVD, which I can then watch on TV.
Can anyone recommend another program - preferably freeware and , if not, reasoably priced?

What sort of trimming ? If you just want to take a little off the start or end, you could use DVD Shrink in re-author mode. This would save you the inevitable quality loss of multiple conversions (to AVI, back to MPG-2). Otherwise use VOB2MPG to get an mpg file, then use one of the free MPG cutters to do your editing (you have to pay if you want non-I frame cutting without a full re-encode though - videoredo or Womble Mpeg Video Wizard).

You can use Womble's fully finctional free trial for a month, which should be more than enough time for your editing, so you can avoid quality loss and paying at the same time! You might like Womble and end up buying it: I did.

  4. You may also wish to try AVIDemux or VirtualdubMPeg to trimming. for best results you may go for direct stream copy Audio and video, both.
