Editing .mpg video files

Is there a way that I can make cuts to an .mpg video file while keeping it in .mpg format and not have to re-render, loosing quality in the process? I don't think I can do this in Vegas. It seems that in Vegas, once bringing the file in, it has to then be saved as a vegas file. I can, of course, do the cutting there, but then would have to re-render it again back to .mpg. I'd loose quality by doing this, right? Is there a software that will allow me to keep it in .mpg format without having to re-render and loose quality? I know this sounds weird. I've gotten myself into a complicated situation.

any editor would have to re-encode cuts and edits. mpeg-2 is a long gop format and there is no way around it. the best at it is probably womble's products. vegas 9.0 can re-render just the cuts and edits if no re-compress long gop rendering is turned on in preferences.

Mpg2Cut2 can do rudimentary edits, but only on I-frames of GOPs. If you don't need frame-accurate editing, transitions, effects, or title keys, try that. Otherwise, go with what aedipuss suggested.

Also, Videoredo works well. It does have to re-encode at cut points like aedipuss mentioned, but that still greatly reduces the time and keeps most of the frames untouched. I have used VideoRedo for about 4 years now and have had great success with it.

YOU GUYS ARE FREAKING AWESOME!!! THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!!!! If you all only knew the horrible predicament I got myself into, you'd understand why I needed this solution so badly and how perfect it is!! I can't thank you enough! VirtualDub is the software I use, I select direct stream copy and the magic begins, you can cut and merge in the same format and in seconds

But it can't save as .mpg, which is what this thread is about.

VirtualDub is cool, I use it too for all my video editing, not sure though if it can save to mpg, never tried it

Why bother to post then? - as I've already said, it can't.
