I've searched through on the threads on these, old and new. I'm picking up one or the other tomorrow so I just wanted to ask some questions beforehand.

First of all, I'm recording video game footage; PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii. I know it does not take HDCP. Already picked up component cables for each. I want to both record to my HDD and live stream. Can it be done simultaneously on either? Both?

I know that the BMI records in uncompressed, but is it possible to compress on the fly? With x264? I have used x264 extensively with MeGUI but have been out of the encoding loop for the past 5 months so I don't remember some details. I do not have a RAID system, but I do have an i7 920.

I have an Asus P6T which was originally reported to be incompatible with the BMI, but BMI's site now says that it should be work with the latest BIOS - I already updated. Can anyone confirm or deny this though?

Lastly, I read that to record PC footage on the HD PVR, I'd have to output from my PC with component cables. Can the BMI do this on it's own?

If either are ruled out for my purposes, let me know.

  2. What do you mean by "live stream"? Streaming to another computer over a network? I don't think you'll be able to do that with either device. Or do you just mean you want to see the video on your monitor with no delay? I don't have a BMI but I believe the picture you see on the monitor is very close to real time. With the HD PVR it is delayed by about half a second -- for gaming you have to use the component passthrough from the HD PVR to a TV/monitor.

x264 is way to slow to encode high definition video while capturing. The BMI comes with an MJPEG encoder for that. Without RAID you will be capturing with the MJPEG encoder. I don't think BMI's software allows you to use VFW or DirectShow encoders.

Live stream as in Justin.tv or Ustream.com. Post yourself playing online while playing. As for the x264, now that you mention it duh! It is too slow. Surprised I didn't think of that.
