i think this quote says it all:

However, Aaron says the City attorney told him that they weren't interested in due process. "The city attorney told me, they weren’t concerned about due process. What they were concerned about was their DVD.
then they wonder why people hate cops, DA's and judges, how i wish it was possible to hold them up to the same standards they hold the general population to.

After reading the entire article, it sounds more like a case of "**** it! It's just the library."

The arrest was more for the Failure to Appear. I've been to traffic court and have seen, in just my session, dozens of people issued arrest warrants because they chose not to appear in court.

If I loaned my car to a friend for the night and couldn't get hold of him for a couple of days, I would report him missing and the car stolen. It's easy for something that initially seems simple to become a big issue.

No, what say's it all is,
"(He) was arrested for a failure to appear warrant out of the City of Littleton,” Aaron's father, Allen Henson, explained to 7News. Allen said he couldn't believe it when he got the call saying his son was in jail for an overdue DVD from Littleton's Bemis Library. “This is a clear violation of his right to due process,” he said.
    Yeah, good luck with that!!
    LMAO!!

If you fail to appear in court for a 10.00 ticket they can issue an arrest warrant!!

They may not bother to hunt you down, but that one screw up and you get pulled over...
    BUH BYE!!!

Don't wanna get hauled to jail for something stupid, take your @$$ to court and deal with it!!

    LOL!!
There are maybe 3 people i'd let take one of my vehicles over night, and 2 are my kids!!

No way in hell would i ever let anyone take my bike!!
I've only ever let 3 people drive my bike and that was only for maybe 10 minutes while i was with them on their bike
And they had been riding as long as me or longer.

Reads like the usual sloppy writing that passes for journalism on the net and elsewhere nowadays. Journalists at this level are lazy, don't take any time to actually investigate, and simply take anything said by the least credible as if it must be true.

"The city attorney told me, they weren’t concerned about due process. What they were concerned about was their DVD."
Is probably the least credible quote in the piece. It is an unsubstantiated quote from the person facing the charge.

On face value, this seems like a gross over-reaction. However the overall quality of the piece makes me question just how much of what is being reported actually happened, or happened in any way like it has been described here.

I strongly disagree with you on this one guns1inger -- that reporter did a good job writing that.

However, a better reporter might have pointed out the DVD, brand new, is $11.50 with free shipping from Amazon -- $30, my ass. I would have also pressed a little harder about the "packed it up" part, maybe see if there was more guilt (or at least go for a "no comment").

Arrests over a book or DVD is unreasonable.

lordsmurf, I also think that the reporting was shoddy.

But then again, about all we ever hear from you are lofty unsupported generalities

here's a "crazy" idea, how about not being issued a "notice to appear" for a dvd, how's that for a novel idea? how about you just send him a bill?

that's one of the biggest problems with this country, we have given prosecutors, judges and police so much power under the guise of keeping us safe and they use said power to jail people over the smallest, dumbest reasons; the usa has only 5% of the world's population but 25% of the world's prison population.

    clearly something is wrong.

    It's all about escalation.

The thing is that they allegedly sent him a bill (though they probably showed proof of delivery, probably cell phone records too). It then basically turned into stolen property, or rather property that they were worried about getting back. They then sent not one, but two summons, which would have sorted it out. It then turned into a warrant.
It wasn't that he simply had an overdue DVD and the next day the police chased him down and arrested him. It went through the whole process before it escalated into a bigger issue.

At the very least, he can get his $200 bail back, since charges were dropped. Plus, he can get his record cleared in a year (maybe sooner, due to the dismissal).

I like how they had to post a cover shot of House of Flying Daggers, as if that was crucial to understanding the story. It's as if they're saying, "Here's what a video that may get you arrested looks like."

Maybe they did, but maybe not, because lord knows a teenager or anyone for that matter, would never ignore such things

Point is, he was NOT arrested for the dvd so to speak, if you are issued a summons to go to court, i don't care what it is for, and you ignore it and don't show up to court.....

Bench warrant can be issued, they wont come looking for you but get pulled over and it pops up....

    Tough $h!t for you....

I just saw the post you're using for this inside joke. What a douche.

I understand failure to appear, but when you do look at the whole story, "failure to appear for an overdue library video". Seriously? My issue is with the escalation and patchy stories from both defense and prosecution.

LITTLETON — The City Council fired longtime Municipal Judge James Kimmel on Tuesday night after he issued an arrest warrant for a teenager who had an overdue $30 DVD from a local library.

Well what do you know, justice was served after all.
The former judge sounds like a real prick, drunk on his courtroom power, ignoring the law.
