I finally found a quality video capture program, but while working, I found out (and kind of guessed) that if I capture it at 640X480 at even 2MB/s it will end up as a quite large file when encoded with xvid. What I want to do is when burnt to DVD, it looks as close to possible as the original source as possible on a SDTV, with some small artifacts when shown on a HDTV (through component cables). I have a few DVDs like that now and they run at about 2 -> 4.5 MB/s. Is there any way I can use VBR with divx or xvid (preferably dixv though), and if so, how? Also, what size should I capture it at? If I capture it at a small size like 320X240 now will it suffer when converted to DVDs? I was planning at capturing it at 512X384 (a 4:3 AR, correct?).

But that looks like a postcard on its side... Or am I missing something?

You set the aspect ratio flags when you encode and author. Your DVD player will play it correctly.
