My 2007 Vaio VGN FZ190 notebook came with the said BD MLT drive. It worked fine, most of the time, until this past month. It ceased to play or burn Blu-ray discs, no matter what the software or disc brand. Then it began to fail to play simple DVDs. I tried updating the driver, cleaning the lenses, and reinstalling the drive, to no avail.

Lots of replacement drives for notebooks are available. The trouble is that most have SATA interfaces that don't match the IDA/ATA of my notebook. I wrongly assumed that, because my drive model number ended in an "S", that it was a SATA interface. The few drives I find with other interfaces are either BD-ROM only or seem to be out of stock.

Can anyone recommend a reliable vendor with notebook internal BD-burner drives with the sort of interface I need? Neither the Sony nor the Panasonics sites are of much help, and the Sony Optiarc site does not offer models that burn BDs and have the interface type needed. The various "adapter" tools I've seen are either usuitable for a notebook or have interfaces that don't really resemble the one of my disc drive.

I am also confused by listings that seem to confuse the various types of interfaces. The available product images often omit the hind-side view to verify the interface configuration. For instance, what is the difference between:

    PATA
    Parallel ATA (E-IDE/ATAPI)
    IDE/ATAPI

Are they all the same? Why, then, do some of the images look unlike my dead drives interface?

I suspect all burners have a limited work life (as opposed to idle life), so I may end up buying an external USB or eSATA drive to do heavy burning, but I also want to have a functioning internal drive for mobility.

    Thanks.

I doubt you can replace that drive with another one, only the same (super) slimtype drivemodel would apply.

I would buy an external from LG or Liteon.
