DVD-5 to DLT, necessary?

I have some older burned DVD-5 "masters" that I've been asked to add ROM folders to and then produce a DLT tape for replication. I've been using DLT for DVD-9 projects, but as far as I understand, I can submit a burned DVD-5 as a master for replication, is this correct? Or is it always better to use DLT, even for DVD-5 projects?

If I go the DLT route, what I plan to do is copy the VIDEO_TS folder off the DVD, start a new project in GEAR, import the VIDEO_TS folder, add the ROM folder and write the tape...

i think the only way to get the right answer is to ask the dvd pressing plant, it's really up to them. they might take a dvdr5 but then turn around and make a dlt from it and charge you. give them a call.

DLT-III tape: best for any DVD replication job. Most replicators will take discs these days, but why take chances? If you have one little error on that disc, it's toast for all replicated copies.

I would not simply copy the VIDEO_TS folder to DLT. Your mastering software needs to provide the appropriate DDP information. Check your GEAR instructions. The only thing different with DVD-5 (as opposed to DVD-9) is that you don't have to worry about the layer break. Everything else is pretty much the same.

Thank you for the replies. I didn't mean to imply copying the VIDEO_TS to the DLT. Of course I'd follow the proper procedures for writing the DDP image to the DLT.. I've done a few DVD-9 layer break projects with DLT and had no trouble.

The only thing I'm concerned about is that I'll be taking the VIDEO_TS off OF a burned DVD in order to create the DLT.

The tutorial is for dual-layer, but I think the same principle applies in terms of importing the VIDEO_TS folder into Gear. Just change the settings to DVD-5.

If you can afford or have access to DLT then go for it. But from what you have described you can potentially introduce error to the DLT tape during the reading of the old DVD's. There is no garbage in gospel out. As usual, it has to be garbage in garbage out. So making DLT doesn't eliminate the errors if they are inherent to the DVDs. If you are outputting your authoring result directly to DLT then it would have been a different story.

Many replicators can except two DVD-5 in DDP 2.1 (if you don't need CSS) format now and that including our favourite replicator newcyberian.com. In how to section of its dvd replication page you will find detail instructions. We use this way to submit our DVD-9 to newcyberian and other replicators and never get into any problems.
