i cant get my new dvd burner to work can someone help me

i try to burn vob files useing nero following your burning dvds with nero
guide and when i load the files hit burn nero stops responding same thing happens with spruce up neodvd ulead dvd movie factory
my processor is a athlon kmd 500
operating system is windows 98
ram is 312mbs
hard drive is 50gbs
and i also have a dvd rom
can someone help me figure out whats going on
and should i have a dvd rom and a dvd burner in the same system

I might be way off here, but I think the problem is that you are trying to burn vob files. They need to be MPEG2 files, and the burning software will create the VOB just like it does when burning MPEG1 to VCD and subsequently DAT.
