I was wondering if there will be an "official" drop-dead date of being able to use full hd over component (or at least up to 1080i on cable dvr's).

The reason I ask is I finally bought a hauppauge hd pvr last week and the thing is great. Though I'm currently having some issues recording anything over two hours - doing another test right now - 1 hour captures are perfect.

What I want to know is if I have a limited life span with the hauppauge hd pvr since it is component only and not a hdmi capture unit. I know I'll probably have to eventually get a blackmagic card for hdmi recording but that is a ways off and I probably really need a quad core to do that justice.

So will I be able to keep using high def over component cables for the foreseeable future? Also its not a total waste if it were to cut out say in a year or so. I can still use it to record off of my ps3 and xbox 360 so long as those continue to allow high def over component cables....

    Thanks.

Get an hdfury2 now, while you still can
Linux _is_ user-friendly. It is not ignorant-friendly and idiot-friendly.

  3. There's a drop dead date for devices using AACS encryption (only Blu-ray now, I think). No AACS device manufactured after 2010 will output analog HD. No AACS device manufactured after 2013 will output analog at all. All AACS devices already have the option to disable analog HD output depending on a flag on the disc. Few (no?) discs implement the flag yet.

I don't know of anything that stops cable boxes from putting out analog HD but you can bet Hollywood is looking very hard for some way to prevent it. I'm not counting on my HD PVR being useful indefinitely.

Although, once those Sony(?) and Samsung(?) HDTVs are out of service you can bet the keys HdFury copied will be revoked. Can the unit's keys be updated?

    Whats an hdfury?

Also I was able to get a full 2 and half hour movie captured without incident last night. So it looks to be doing just fine.

So bluray is the only thing with certain cutoffs at the moment. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for the cable/sat companies to do a firmware upgrade to lock off the hd over component at their will.

But at least we have some time to use it.

Also at hte very least I should always be able to use it to cap video games at high def quality.

The HDFury2 is an HDMI to component/VGA converter. It uses stolen keys to get around HDCP encryption. Using it you can convert any HDMI output to component video. The original HDFury only converted HDMI+HDCP to VGA.

How much did you pay for your SVHS decks so you can capture old tapes to make DVDs?

There is no law that analog component must go away. If the cable or satelite companies do this, cancel your subscription.

...and what, read a book instead?

I agree it's the only useful way of showing them you don't like some change they make - but it's cutting off your nose to spite your face. If it wasn't a "DRM must be fought at all costs" kind of issue, and self respecting geek with an old TV without HDMI would use this as an excuse to upgrade the TV!

    Cheers,
    David.

@2bdecided - actually my purpose for the post was archiving my dvr through component. I have hdmi on my tv. I just would hate to have that avenue cut off.

But actually you can get high def through sat or fios so cable isn't the only way to go. It just the other options may not be ideal or available in all areas.

Each premium subscription is valued by them at over $6000 so maybe they will buy me a new HDTV to retain me.

    Alternates
    1 Basic cable + DBS
    2 Basic cable + Online (Hulu et.al.)
    3 Basic cable + Netflix
4 OTA + any combo of above

If the cable company cuts off analog output you can be sure it's because of pressure from Hollywood. Which means sat and fios will be doing the same.
