  1. Hi, I own a Philips DVP3550K DVD player with USB input, thanks to this forum I managed to hook up my external hard drive to it with FAT32 and an external power source to the drive.

The problem is, while all the .avi and .jpg plays back properly, when I was trying to playback .vob file (which was ripped using DVD Shrink), I can't see the subtitle. It's strange, the selection for the subtitle is allowed, i.e. I'm able to choose for example 'English', 'French', but the subtitle text just doesn't show. To be honest, I did managed to get the subtitle showing for just a Few times, and the happening of this is totally random, as in there are no particular settings which can cause the subtitle to show, if it comes it comes out of the blue.. Even if the subtitle shows, the font doesn't looks clear, and for some title the font is pink in color.. ha..

Well, I am just hoping if someone has experienced this before and could point me to the right direction. Should I rip using another software? Is there something to do with the sub-picture structure of the subtitle? Etc.. Thanks for any advice.

Since when do these players play individual VOB files?

Urm, I thought most USB DVD players do? Well this is my first player with USB input, and the journey of getting the ext hdd to it has been fun to say the least! Now besides the usual xvid and divx, I'm looking to rip my entire DVD collections into the hdd and playback through the hdd. It's uncompressed DVD9 vob files I'm talking about. Yes everything seems to be working fine i.e. playbacks, picture quality, the only two things it can't do 'yet' are:
    - showing subtitles correctly
    - jumping chapters (it will jump to the next .vob file instead..)

Could it be something to do with the .IFO file...?

No......a VOB file is not a DVD.....the VIDEO_TS folder is the DVD....and the one thing that glues them all together inside that VIDEO_TS folder is the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. If your player doesn't allow you to select that VIDEO_TS.IFO file inside that VIDEO_TS folder....you will need to find a new way of doing things.

Also....if this DVD you ripped with DVDShrink is a new Hollywood released, factory pressed DVD....you need to start using DVDFabDecrypter to cope with the new copy protections they come up with almost weekly.

  6. Thanks for the advice. Now I understand that a DVD is more than just a .vob file whereby the .ifo contains chapters info much like a .cue sheet for audio files.

My player is able to see .ifo for some titles and not for some. Again, it's inconsistent and it must be something to do with how the player recognizing the .ifo created. I'm now trying with both DVDFab and DVD Shrink to see the outcome.

Well just throwing a stone here but has anyone successfully playback a full DVD from your ext hdd? May I know what are the ripping methods? Cheers.
