I don't know the correct term for this, but I want to convert a long video clip (say 1 hour) into a short video clip (say with a running time of just 1 minute).

I'm guessing this will involve blending and dropping frames so the final video maintains the essence of the action from 1 hour compressed into 1 minute.

As I run Ubuntu I hope this can be achieved using a Linux application like avidemux.

AVIFRate. chg 30fps to 300fps (or similar) and save.

Use this as a source for editor with std framerate. Render/export as normal.

    OR

Virtualdub, skip multiple frames and save (using direct stream copy mode).
Won't re-render this way and will keep quality up and have no blending.

  4. To convert an hour long video clip to a minute long clip using AVIFrate you would have to increase the frame rate 60 fold. So a 30 fps clip would be changed to 1800 fps. You probably won't find any player that can play that frame rate unless the frame size is very small.

Use VirtualDub's Frame Rate Conversion option and the Decimate by [60] option.

I was just throwing it out there. However, it's not like it (app like AVIFRate) needs to "play" it. Just that it need to recognize it and allow it as input, so you can export/render it.

And, yeah, I was thinking of "Decimate", couldn't remember the name and was on my laptop (no Vdub there).

Many thanks guys for the advice.

I used the VirtualDub frame rate/decimate example which gave me an edited video 1/10 of the play time and size.

I would personally refer this to an editor (being an editor myself first in this hobby ). You would need to speed up the video (segment) and render it as such with a "proper" fps.

It's very simple with VideoStudio X2 for example. Drag the clip into the timeline. Right click on it there. Select "Playback speed" and experiment with the options until it satisfies you when you "Preview" it.

I'm sure other editors have similar features.

You will have to re-encode, but at least it won't be an exotic fps that other players will have problems with.

If "deadrats", our friend and a community member, is reading this: Record a dead rat decomposing over two weeks. Then make a one-minute video out of it. Quite the horror show I'd say.
I hate VHS. I always did.
