  2. Is the movie PAL or NTSC? What can your DVD player play?

  3. on my dvd player the remote control has a button that will switch from NTSC to Pal and vice versa. just like gammit said, this is probably the problem.

That option in Nero doesn't change the way the file was encoded, it only controls the menus created by Nero, and if you wanted Nero to encode your file for you.

Like bkoyle said, some DVD players have that option. It could be in your setup menu. If not, you'll either have to re-encode it, or but a PAL 2 NTSC converter
(@bkoyle that's handy having it on the remote)

You must have the Nero demo. Don't know why they don't at least let you burn at 2x or something. Was EZ not working for you?

About your Philips DVD 701. It is a Non US DVD! I can't find any info on it for the US. Everything is from the UK.
It is listed as region free, and they sell region free hacks. that's funny I even did a search at Philips' web site, and came up with Nil.

here's the google search maybe you can make something out of it http://www.google.com/search?q=DVD+701+philips&num=100&hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&start=100&sa=N

I'd check radio shack for the converter
