    hi all

I picked up Phillips dvd 5990 and a 40gig usb2 ext drive 2 days ago.

but im having some problems and a learn curve im try to pass im new to this so some help would really be great,,

    1. i got a 12gig file (BluRay 1080p VC1 5 1 WMV) im trying to put on the usb drive but every time i try it says the drive is fully even doe it's empty.. after doing some reading i think it's because fat32 can only Handel 4 gig files max, Is this true? and how can i work around this? (mabey split the file up) also even if i get this on the drive will the dvd player play this type of file((BluRay 1080p VC1 5 1 WMV) )?

2.is there a wya to make this player play (BluRay.x264) files ? and/or .mkv files?

    3. is there such a thing as HD (1080p) divx files? or are all dvix SD?

    thanks all for the help..

    1. Yep, max 4gb on a fat32 partition. Maybe possible to split using asfbin. But your player wont support it, it doesn't support any HD video material.

    2. No.

    3. Yep, you can make hd divx/xvid files but your/most divx dvd player doesn't support it.

You can try a different formatting tool that may allow larger files with FAT32 like the freeware Swissknife: http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm

To convert it from command prompt
open command prompt click start point to all programs point to accessories then click command prompt . In the command prompt window type convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs Make sure you select the right drive letter for your usb drive you want to convert

  5. If you convert the drive to NTFS the Philips 5990 won't read it at all.

Swissknife will allow FAT32 partitions over 32GB (which the format program built into Windows will not create) but there will still be a 4GB file size limit.

The 5990 will not play anything over 720x576.

For the same reason I can't hover above the ground in my car...
    It wasn't designed for that.

    Answered in your other post.

The 5990/92 only decodes SD resolutions. You can put HD files on your drive but the 5990/92 can't read them.

Upscale is an entirely different process.

  9. Upscaling players only have the the ability to decompress SD video to a 720x480 (NTSC, or 720x576 PAL) frame buffer. Then they use an upscaling chip to upscale that small frame to a larger output device on-the-fly. This chip works with only a few lines at a time. It never produces a full HD frame within the player. These players have no ability to decompress HD sources and not enough memory to hold full HD frames internally.

1 - No way to keep the FAT32 format and have files larger than 4GB on it. What I did was convert to HFS+ with MacDrive, because my xbox360 will read that format. I have had files on there up to 39GB with no problems whatsoever.

And a Philips 5990 DVD player can read that?
