I have ripped the same DVD chapter with DVD Fab 5 and DVD Decrypter, but when I open this .VOB, the picture appears all grey, and when I convert it to .MP4, I get the same result. This is the first time this has happened, what is the problem here?

If you play the vob using vlc media player or mpc does it look okey then?
-
before it is converted or anything it plays perfectly on vlc media player. i am ripping a wwe dvd by the way.
-
thank you, works great, but I need some help with this software.

xvid4psp comes up with an error when I open my .VOB file saying:

"You don't have YV12 decoder! It's needed for source interlace detection" where can I download this decoder and once downloaded, where do I place it?

	video=>resolution/aspect

 configure your settings

e.g. if your source was a pal 4:3 720x576, just enter those settings, and remove the cropping (i.e. set to 0) (it sometimes autocrops black borders)

 where do I do this?

also, the ffdshow method did not work, the same error message still appears
-
I still get the same error message.

what does the resize filter do?

 and

when I open my .VOB in mediainfo the aspect ratio is stated as 4:3 but when I open with video configuration settings in xvid4psp, the input aspect ratio 1:1, and I tried changing the output settings to get the same aspect ratio as the input but I can't, what's the problem?
-
The error message is no yv12 decoder ? anything else ?Originally Posted by Nitro89

The resize filter choses the resizing algorithm. If your input and output are the same dimensions (e.g in my screenshot above) it is not used because there is no resizing done

If you cannot load the video (i.e. you get the same error message) you shouldn't even be able to access the menu, so something is wrong with what you are describing

The program is likely reading the aspect ratio incorrectly, because no retail dvd's have 1:1 aspect ratio. This might be because the video isn't loaded properly

Can you play the video in MPC ? Don't use VLC to test, because it doesn't rely on direct show filters.
-
I do still get the same error message but the video loads onto xvid4psp very well, there is a picture unlike in what I was describing with avidemux.

the .VOB file plays perfectly on VLC but on MPC, I get the same picture problem as I did with avidemux.

The DVD I ripped was WWE Confidential Volume 1 which was released with my WWE Summerslam 2004 DVD.

Can you skip forward a few minutes (seek) into the video in mpc? or is the picture still all dark?

VLC doesn't use directshow and can play damaged files

I think it is not properly decrypted, or there is a sequence at the beginning that is causing this. Some copy protections use this method of putting garbage at the beginning. Did you use the most recent version of DVDFab? Do you have anydvd ? Try using that

If you load the vob into graphstudio and render it, it will show the filters being used in directshow. Do the pins connect and what splitter are you using?

I've never installed ffdshow separately, by itself, and have noticed no trace of it on my systems. Is it automatically installed (for use) by any other programs, and if so which ones ? Can it conflict with anything else you might have installed ? I ask that because of the frequent advice given here to skip the big Codec packs, and to avoid installing any unnecessary codecs. That may not apply in this case, but I thought I'd ask.Originally Posted by poisondeathrayWhen in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

I have used the most recent version of DVD Fab and AnyDVD, but still no luck, the same problem is constantly occuring.

This is the file opened with graphstudio:

Many codec packs will install ffdshow, but you should install it separatelyOriginally Posted by Seeker47

It might cause conflicts, but this is rare. It is highly configurable, and you can enable/disable different decoders easily with drop down menus

It's probably the most common decoder pack installed because it decodes almost everything when configured properly

It is definitely safe to install this one. There is active development and it is constantly improved/updated.

Nitro89 - when you push play in graphstudio, is it still grey screen?

Can you try other vob's in MPC / graphstudio ? (ie. is the problem isolated to this particular movie or a system problem with directshow?)
-
yes, when I push play in graphstudio I get the grey screen.

Only this DVD appears like this, my other wrestling DVD's don't get this result.
-
I still think something is amiss with that video, probably some copy protection.

Instead of encoding with directshow (as xvid4psp does), you could try:

using avisynth + dgmpgdec , this is a bit trickier to do if you're not familiar with it

You could try opening it directly in vdub with the mpeg2 plugin

You could try using ffmpeg (a gui would be avanti)

I'm not sure which splitter/decoder vlc is using, because you said that was able to play it back. You can encode directly out of vlc, but I'm not sure how to set it up
-
but it gives you that error message? yet the conversion works? that is weird

Can you post the script to see what it is using when it is loaded? avisynth=>edit filtering script (it will just be a bunch of text)
-
	here's the script:

I keep all borders etc same as the original.

One question though, when I encode in extreme, turbo and ultra. Turbo gives me the biggest filesize and bitrate etc, I though extreme was the highest, why is this (yes I am using the same quantizer all the time, in this case, 18)?
-
Turbo has many of the options turned down or off, you can check them by pushing the "e" button.Originally Posted by Nitro89

Because of less precise analysis and lower quality settings, it is not as efficient, so you need a bigger filesize/bitrate to compensate for the same level of "quality" and vice-versa with extreme (ie. you get better compression with higher quality settings - same quality at lower filesize, or better quality at the same filesize. The tradeoff is slower encoding of course)
