    Hi,

I've been dubbing VHS tapes and Laserdiscs to dvd using a dvd recorder. They play back fine on my CRT but when I watch them on LCD there are lots of lines on screen during movement. I'm assuming this is interlacing? How can I remove the lines so that the picture appears smooth and has no line-artifacts? Is it recommendable to do so (I read something about losing picture quality)? Also, what programes are best and easiest to deinterlace with?

I've included a picture to illustrate what I'm seeing.

Go easy on me here, cause I'm totally new to this!

ps. I'm working in both Pal and NTSC

    Dave.

A software dvd player should be able to deinterlace it when you play it. What are you playing with now?

But does it look same in a software dvd player like vlc, mpc, powerdvd, windvd? In vlc you can manually enable deinterlacing also.

Do normal dvd players deinterlace? I haven't got an LCD tv to try it on.

Progressive DVD players will deinterlace while in progressive mode. The quality of the deinterlace needs to be compared to the deinterlacer in the progressive TV. Try it both ways

Set DVD player to 480i/1080i --> Progressive TV deinterlaces.

Set DVD player to 480p/720p/1080p --> DVD player deinterlaces and passes 480p/59.94 or 720p/59.94 to the progressive TV over component. 1080p setting would force a 24p conversion (quality hit)

    Edit for PAL

Set DVD player to 576i/1080i --> Progressive TV deinterlaces.

Set DVD player to 576p/720p/1080p --> DVD player deinterlaces and passes 576p/50 or 720p/50 to the progressive TV over component. 1080p setting may force a 24p conversion (quality hit)

    1. So they can compress more (e.g. divx,xvid,h.264)
    2. For web distribution (e.g. flash, wmv)
