  1. Anyone have this problem? After I have captured avi files from my DV, or after I create an AVI file, it becomes locked by Windows. I can then not move it, delete it or rename it. After rebooting the machine, I have a few seconds during which time I can delete things, but that's all.

I have this problem on BOTH machines that I have XP installed on.

Please don't tell me to remove XP, I spent enough time trying to avoid this problem as it is!!

    Thanks for any help.

  2. Check the security settings for the file, the folder it's in, and the parent folder.

  3. Have checked that, but makes no difference. No sharing, no security. It is only avi files that are affected. Any other file in the same directory, mpg, txt, etc. are fine. Just trouble with avis.

I can't believe that I am the only one with this problem, since both of my XP machines exhibit the same behaviour.

I got the same problem with my win xp (xphome dutch) it's has nothing to do with directory properties and it are only avi-files that have that problem.

  5. I think the problem here is XP's indexing and thumbnailing service.

When you select an AVI for the first time XP tries to index it and then display the first frame of the avi, during this time XP will lock the file.

To test my theory out. click on the avi to highlight it, wait till the first frame has been displayed at the side of the folder window, now right click on the avi and delete it, and it will work ok!!

  6. Not a bad theroy, but unfortunately, still got the same problem.

The files are even locked when you fire up a command window and try deleting using a DOS command, without have the file selected in windows etc.

  7. This definitely sounds like an XP bug...

I've been having similar problems with other file types as well.
I'll right click on a file and choose "Delete".
The system tells me the file cannot be deleted because it's in use.
Then I try it again and it works. Or sometimes not.

This type of stuff just pisses me off - I used to be a test engineer at Microsoft - (shouldn't have left - I would have found that bug).
I wonder if it's on the MSKB - I'll check it out and get back to yall.

  8. Mark the file.
    Right klick.
Selct properties. It might take some time.
    Klick Ok.
    Delete the file.

    Bug in XP.

  9. Thanks for the try. Still no go.

By 'Mark' the file, I assume you mean select it?

I still have the same problem, a dialog comes up saying cant delete as file is open by another program.

  10. I see I'm not the only one having this trouble....this is crazy. The only way I have been able to delete them,is going to safe mode with comand prompt. Sure hope they fix this problem soon.

  11. I had this problem under XP when I frameserved a video file from VirtualDub. It is caused by running the proxyon.reg file in the aviproxy folder under VirtualDub. It may also be caused by running the AuxSetup.exe. Try running proxyoff.reg and/or the AuxSetup and use the uninstall option.

When you wish to frameserve run the proxyon/install and then do the opposite when finished.

  12. Would this only affect the file that had been frame served? Or does the frame server affect all AVIs? I will try this solution though as I have used VD frame serving on both of my machines.

  13. For me it affected all AVI files on my machine. Until I did the uninstall/proxyoff I could not delete or move any AVI files. I could download or create them only.

  14. This should keep it from keeping the record.
    navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
create a new DWord value called "NoRecentDocsHistory" without the ""
then double-click it and set it to 1

Then you might need to reboot for the changes to take effect.
