What the bloody... burn speed suddenly plummits...

All of the sudden my burn speed has crashed. What used to take 20 - 30 minutes to burn a standard dvd now is taking almost 14 hours! The only thing I see that MAY be causing a problem is the Device Buffer is only 4% and holding steady. I'm using Isoburn at the moment, but the problem also accord with DVDFab. Can anyone give me a hint as to what may be going on?

Any idea how to check this problem in Vista? It's a new machine w/ Vista and I am still trying to get used to it. I have ATA Channels rather than IDE. New hardware system and I am not up on it yet.

Hey boldego...

I just read Wombles guide on fixing DMA problems, but when I got into my Device Manager, and looked at the ATA Channels, there WERE NO DEVICES LISTED for me to reset!

In channel properties there were 2 "Supported Devices", but none listed.

Am I screwed or what? Do you have any idea why I can't "see" my devices in advanced settings?

It would be helpful if you posted what brand your dvd burner is. I suspect your drive could be a sata instead of a pata (ide). Is this a computer you built yourself or is a dell, hp, gateway or acer??????

You are correct, I haven't been sitting around, I've actually still be working on the problem, and I DO believe I have a SATA drive. A Sony D21 in a Dell Inspiron to be exact.

What's the model number of your Dell Inspiron laptop? What brand of dvd media are you using? Use IMGBURN to burn dvd media. NERO is full of bugs. Are you surfing the net while you're burning dvd discs? It's always best to shutdown any programs running in the background while you burn discs and not to surf the net as well. DMA is for pata (ide) drives. Use IMGBURN to find out your model number of your laptop dvd burner.

Hey budz.

I am an idiot. I have an Inspiron 531 desktop. I used Imgburn to burn that last dvd that took 15 hours to burn. It's NEVER taken that long since I got the new machine. My burner is a Sony D21-00. Usually I am doing nothing when a disc is burning.

Any thoughts?

Usually I am doing nothing when a disc is burning.

Do you disable programs like antivirus, spyware programs when burning? Even if you aren't doing anything when a disc is burning those types of programs can make a difference if they are not disabled.

When using IMGBURN look to see what the model/make of your dvd burner is. I don't know much about Vista so I can't ask you to use other programs which could identify your internal dvd burner. For some reason I thought you had a inspirion laptop. D21 is the media id of the dvd disc you're using which is manufactured by SONY. Have you tried using VERBATIM dvd media? They are on sale at BEST BUY this week 50 pack spindle for $12.99 and you can use a online 10% off coupon as well.

I have the same problem as hal05154. I have a dell inspiron 531 desktop with vista home basic. When I go into device manager I have 2 IDE channels. When I select properties and advanced settings there are no target ID's, no device type, and no current mode listed. How can I find out that info?

My first thought was bad media. I have always associated slow burns with media. It will be interesting to see what the problem was.

Good point oldandintheway. I dread talking to someone from Bangalore. Talking to technical support is no fun, especially when you can't understand the language. Maybe I'll just live with it.

Don;t live with it.

Dell prices their equipment at higher levels than other manufacturers and underconfigures their standard configurations in order to make more of the purchase price available for support. If you do not insist on adequate service you are allowing yourself to be cheated.

And some people actually get to support techs whose first language is American English.

If you can;t communicate with tech ask for a supervisor, and if that is unhelpful ask for a manger. It does work.

The fact that two Inspiron owners on this forum have the problem suggests Dell may have a fix.

If you want to try something else - uninstall your IDE drivers, reboot and let the system reinstall them.

My suggestion would be to open up those DELL 531 desktops and see whether or not the dvd burners are SATA or PATA (IDE). The OP hasn't replied yet so we do not know if the dvd burner is SATA or PATA (IDE). Uninstalling the IDE DRIVERS will do nothing if the dvd burners are SATA.

Willy5157 Please use IMGBURN to see what's the brand of your dvd burner. From that we can tell if it's a SATA or PATA dvd burner.

I assume you mean if I am in safe mode or normal start-up. It was normal. I opened device manager and checked the properties.

Sorry for the delay getting back. LIfe got in the way....

I finally deleted my drives and let the system autoinstall them on reboot. Everything has worked fine ever since.

I'm not entirely sure I had bad media, I'm still using the Sony and they haven't given me any trouble.

I had the same problem as HalO5154, so I followed along the thread and checked my DMA status only to see:



Anyway, my IDE channels seem to be duplicated! I have two primary and two secondary IDE channels. (Plus under Human Interface Devices all of those are duplicated as well, Ive discovered. But not elsewhere.)

Under the Properties of the first listed Primary and Secondary IDE channels Transfer Mode is listed as DMA IF Available but current Mode is listed as Not Applicable. The second entries for each say DMA If Available/Ultra DMA Mode 5.

Do I just uninstall these entries and hope that fixes my sudden slowdown? Can anyone think of any reason there would be two Primary/Secondary channels? What about the INTEL Ultra ATA controller entry?

if mode 5 can't be selected it could be a bad cable. mode 2 is the best a 40 wire cable can do, mode 5 needs 80 wire. a ground wire could be broken.
