I'm not sure which one is going to corrupt and lose more files, the solid-state drives or these new
WD 20,000 rpm hard drives. Just get a 1TB Seagate drive and be happy that your files and videos
will remain "good" for years to come. Dependability is FAR more important than speed when it comes
    to video.

you can choose to stick your head in the sand if you wish, but technology marches on even if you don't join the parade.

these drive will be just as reliable as current ones. they are designed for quiet, cool, fast transfer of large amounts of data, which is just what i need in my video business. the throughput should be on the order of 3 times what a 7200 drive can maintain.

3X 7200 throughput is wishful thinking. I'd be surprised if in real life you got a 20% increase.

Aaahhh..... isn't this cute? More words of wisdom from someone with little or no actual experience.

Honestly, do you or have you own(ed) some of the current 10K rpm WD Raptor drives ?

Have you kept a fairly large volume of critical files on flash-memory cards and/or flash drives ?

I can say "yes" to both of the above. My experience is that flash-memory storage is extremely
unreliable, prone to corrupted data. My Raptor is still good, but the failure rate of the current 10K rpm
Raptor drives as a group is MUCH higher than a good solid 7200 rpm Seagate drive. Two friends of
mine have lost most of their saved videos when their Raptor suddenly died.

I won't even mention the huge price difference between these "new" technologies and the more reliable ones.

Usually, it's young kids who crave speed over other priorities. People who run businesses usually go for
low cost per GB of storage and RELIABILITY !!!

Just my opinion, I'm sure you have your own

sorry but i won't even put a seagate/maxtor in a production unit of mine. too freakin' prone to total sudden meltdown. same goes for hitachi/ibm drives. i don't give a rat's ass if they do have a 5 year warranty, a dead drive costs me money in down time and redoing projects. at this point i only use western digital.

i don't store projects on hard drives after completion. i'm a middle man, i just do the editing/encoding. all i need is reliability and speed - i get both with w.d.

as for experience, lol, ok if you say so...

  9. All I care about is RAID
I can throw any 10k drive in and not worry.

If they can get better throughput, then I'm all for it.

That is why you use a 20k drive for your OS and 7200rpm for you data.
