I have been trying to use DVDFab Platinum to convert my dvd to avi and well it does it fine and all but for the fact that all the files have closed caption/subtitles on them. I am not sure why and I don't or can't seem to turn it off in the program. Is there a setting I am missing?

oh man thanks much I feel like a freakin idiot, but thanks for giving me the clue.

edit: ok, I did what was suggested and I still get text/captions all over my vid files. and I can't shut if off when the file is playing, so is it being embedded in the file itself?

per Louv68: Conversion Settings > Subpicture > Extract to idx/sub file

I am following this thread because I also use DVDFab Platinum. What version, Rjupiter, of DVDFab are you using. They are up to 5.0.7.6 now, which is what I am using, and I cannot find this set of configurations anywhere in the settings menu.

  5. Just uncheck the subpictures box if you don't want subs (lower right hand corner)

They shouldn't be. Turn off the view subtitles option in your software player, and see if the subtitles go away. For example, in Windows Media Player, open the Play menu > Captions and Subtitles and you'll see if they are enabled or not.

DVDFab defaults to include all subtitles in any dvd you rip with it. When you are selecting the video files off of the dvd just make sure to uncheck all subtitles if you don't want any.

Rjupiter's question is regarding to converting DVD's to .avi, and not have subtitles hardcoded in.

Malicious's advice will work if you want no subtitles at all. When you convert them to .avi, no subtitles will be available either.
