Finding and extracting single sound

Ok I'm not sure what it would be called or how to go about doing it, much less if it's even possible without buying some expensive software or whatever.

There is a sound from a tv show that I want to get (not the theme sound, that's easy). It's an alarm/wail from one scene, and there is talking as well as music in the background. I was wondering if there are any programs that could find a repeating sound and then somehow sample it out of the audio/filtering out the other sounds.

Just in case that doesn't make any sense, or at least phrased in a different way to make sure I explained it right. Something that will listen to several seconds of audio, and then out of that, find a consistent/repeating sound and allow me to extract only that. Perhaps even something that lets me give it a small range to use to compare (so it knows roughly how long the sound is).

Sort of like a watermark finder for pictures, in a manner of speaking.


I've already tried doing a google for various alarm/wail/siren/yelp sounds and can't quite seem to find it, so I'm trying to see if I can either do it this way, or if someone is more resourceful than I am, they may know the specific name of the sound I am looking for.


The sound is in an old TV show called Airwolf. Episode 2x07, beginning at 10:00 and lasts about 10 seconds. For anyone who has seen this show and this episode, it's the first time that Hawke has Kaitlin inside of Airwolf and is trying to train her about the controls and she hits a button that almost destroys the ship. If anyone happens to know where I can get that sound, that would be wonderful. However, if not, then I hope that what I am asking for isn't near impossible.


Also, if there's already a thread on how to do this, please forgive me. I wasn't sure exactly what to look for (what it's called) and doing searches for words like "extracting" and "sound" will yield thousands of unrelated results, and might not give me anything that I am looking for.

The short answer is 'unlikely'. You might be able to use an EQ setting in your audio editor to reduce the amount of extraneous noise, but you are unlikely to remove it completely. Chances are the sound effect is from a stock library somewhere and can be found in other shows. This might be the best way to get a clean version.
