I am on the look for a dvd player that offers good disc compatibility. A LG-RH299H was bought but this is a recorder and in my opinion does not do a good job as far as playing dvd's is concerned. This device will never by used as a recorder.

Are there any other issues with using a dvd-recorder exclusively to play dvd's? I tried explaining to the person who bought it that you get what you pay for. If you pay a certain amount for a dvd-recorder and you pay the same amount for a dvd-player you will get a much better player than the one in the recorder.

In a technical view how can I explain this to this person?

I think it is a simplistic argument that holds only to a small degree. The final video and audio quality is dependent on all links in the chain. It also varies from brand to brand. Any difference that may exist may not even be noticeable if the TV or AV amp is of a low quality, or composite connections are used.

I use my Toshiba DVD recorder to record and watch dvd's, it performs more better then my Sony dvd player, equivelant price. When I play burned movies off the computer, Sony freezes burned dvd's, but Toshiba never did.

In my opinion player vs recorder for playback is a non-argument.

Any differences will be a result of the specific models and to a larger extent all of the factors Gunslinger enumerated.

The only argument which might be made, is that if you have less hardware you have less hardware to fail - pointing toward the player as less.

In my opinion, you rarely get what you pay for when there is a wide variation in product cost for similar capability.

The biggest complaint about really cheap DVDplayers is not picture quality, its high "infant mortality" - DOAs or failures within a few weeks. Get one that works and they work well.
