I am an employee at a large university media center. I want to improve our workflow and one idea I had was automating a rackmount DV player connected to one of our XServes. For this type of service we do not do any editing, simply capture the tape start to finish. Is there any utility (command line preferred, GUI would be fine though) that can capture on tape insert?

I have solutions for all other aspects of the workflow I had in mind but I am stumbling in finding something that can simply detect a tape insertion and begin capturing until tape end. Thanks!
