I have a various collections of found different softwares (All Freeware), converters, plugins, codecs, sites, and tutorials that are more than enough to get a typical first time encoder or someone without alot of experience and even more advanced encoders who are looking for a better/easier way to encode a great start. You can encode just about any format into any format with all of this and create/edit just about any format as well. It should be all up to date with the newest versions and also some of the previous versions for rolling back if needed as of today.
Chances are you wont have to come back here as much, asking how to backup your dvd's or encode them. This should make it for the most part common sense and easier for you to put 2 and 2 together and get started. If you wish to know things about settings or how to use a specific freeware then refer to "Doom 9" or "Videohelp" forums, search engine, or the manuals/documentation.
Im sure theres some stuff thats not in here and or possibly one or two better things to get what you want done if your an avanced encoder. But there should be plenty/more than enough good things even for more advanced encoders.

Basically if your wanting to rip your DVD's and encode them into high quality files of the most commonly used and wanted formats without much or any hassle onto your computer then this is the package for you.
