    what codecs should it get ?

    The ones you need.

    I know that sounds flip, but the worst thing you can do it just throw codecs onto your machine.

    Use mediainfo or g-spot to determine what you need when a video refuses to play. Install just that codec. DO NOT install a codec pack.

    Use VLC for playback. 90% of the time you won't need to install anything else for it to work.
