    AVIs can be problematic. Almost anyhting can be inside an AVI
    wrapper. That's why the problem only happens once in a while.
    It could be intractable.

    Toast 8, or Toast 8.01?

    And as Al said , the codecs needed for the AVI can be anything?
    First, can the .avi file play from begiing to end in Quicktime Player?
    Second, if so, while playing, what does Quicktime report
    are the codecs needed for the file by accessing
    Window-->Show Movie Inspector?

    To add insult to injury - AVI is a video format. ISO is a disk image format. You might as well ask for "Help convert water to bucket". But I suppose "Help convert AVI to Video DVD" is what you mean?
    I guess things are the same with Macs as with PCs - AVI files can be corrupt (even if they seem to play fine) and throw the reencoding out of whack. Quite common for AVIs obtained thru P2P channels. (Not saying your AVI is...)

    Like Mat, I'm confused by the post. Burning an avi to an iso 9660 cd doesn't involve 'conversion' in the recode sense. Burning to iso9660 is done so the disc can be read by any modern OS.
