I converted an mkv to .vob with SUPER.
Then I converted the .vob to .avi with VirtualDub because there where subtitles to include.
But then ( I used 1st pass and 2nd pass conversion ) the output movie doesn't run
smoothly, it's kinda shocky if you know what I mean...

Until I converted the movie to .avi, the movie did run smoothly!

Am I doing something wrong in VirtualDub?

What codec did you use during the conversion to AVI? If you used uncompressed AVI theproblem is most likely your hard drive not keeping up with the speed of the video.

BTW: I am not familiar with SUPER but can't you save the result as an AVI from there? You are loosing a lot of quality by first converting to mpeg2 (VOB) and then to AVI. It would be better to first use SUPER to a lossless codec like Lagarith or HuffYUV and then add the subs in VirtualDub, saving to whatever codec you want as end result (most likely DivX or XviD).
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I use the Xvid MPEG-4 Codec.
If I use SUPER to convert the mkv to avi,
will the quality loss be less then if I first convert
    to MPEG-2?

try AlltoAVI instead. Amongst other features, it's website lists

    # 100% OGM/MKV support
    # Any format, as long as you can watch, you can convert
    # Subtitle track selection
    # Audio track selection
Anything that avoids needless re-encoding is a good thing.

Yep, Virtualdub won't convert my mkv ( something with direct stream copy but I can't choose any other option! )
    I've also tried riverpast.

Yes, you should avoid reconverting video to a lossy format many times as you lose video quality each step. I would try alltoavi, it can convert mkv to avi xvid with subtitles in one step but it may not work with all mkvs.

Wow thanks! The quality is sooooo much better!
I have one question left, I can't figure out how to put the subtitles
in the file, permanent I mean and not selectable...

If you don't have a special reason, keeping external subtitles (like in .srt format) is always to be preferred, as adding permamnet requires reencoding, and if they aren't made permanent when going to AVI in the first place - well, there's quality loss down that road...

    I got it working!
Thanx for all the help and I have one last question,
what is the music on the background of AllToAvi?
It sounds so familiar and I can't figure out where
    it's from!
