every time i open up ffmpegX (os x 10.3.9) it wants to go through the component self install -- wants me to locate the 3 utilities (two of which are the same so why ask twice?). does this mean i've never correctly allowed it to self install? or does it mean that it just has to do this every time for some reason?
thanks.

If the Installer window comes up repeatedly, then the binaries weren't installed correctly.

You should download the binaries, unzip the .zip file. That should give you three binaries. Use the Locate button to tell the installer where they are on your drive. When installing, these files get copied, renamed (in part), made Unix Executable if needed and given proper permissions.
After relaunch, the presence and size of these copied binaries is checked in their special location (/Library/Application Support/ffmpegX/). If they're found faulty or absent, then the Installer window will come up again.

thanks very much for the reply.

turns out i hadn't successfully installed any of the three -- you'd have thought that the app might have said "no, that didnt' work" rather than nothing :/

i have now successfully done two of the three files. can't do mpeg2enc. all the links seem to be to mpeg2enc.intel.

the intel bit indicates to me it might only work on an intel machine but ffmpegX is saying that's what i should use even though i have a ppc machine. i have a file on my drive called mpeg2enc which in point ffmp... to but on quiting and reopening the app the mpeg2enc part is in red unlike the other two.

i've searched for mpeg2enc for powerpc but can't find anything. why would the app ask for a .intel file when it's not an intel machine? is there a ppc version?

 thanks.

Quite unfortunate naming there. The 'mpeg2enc.intel' component is actually a Universal Binary (Intel+PPC code), so that is the one you would want to install on either architecture. The component 'mpeg2enc' is the older version, and is marked as not being right for being older and the 'wrong' file size.Originally Posted by jboyd
