Here's a synposis of my frustrating problem: 9 outta 10 times when I play a DVDR movie in my SONY or JVC DVD player the movie starts skipping parts and eventually freezes; never at the start of the movie typically 1/2 or more of the way through it (conviently after you've gotten interested in the plot etc. ). These play issues happen on both of my players.

I am using DVD Shrink 3.2 to back up a commercial DVD, and DVD Decrypter to make my DVDR. The DVD disks I am using are Memorex DVD+R. I have not tried another brand of disks. The DVDR movies play just fine in my PC's DVD burner. I have not tried lots of other DVDR's that others have burned but I don't remember having any problems with those. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Thank you!

MEMOREX is crappy media. Use good quality dvd media like VERBATIM & TAIYO YUDEN. That's why you're having freezing and playback problems on your standalone dvd players.

MINUS (-) Rs would be my first choice.

What speed do you write at?

I have an old Onkyo DVD player that performs better with discs written at speeds less than 16x. I normally use 4x. It also works better with DVD-R discs. I have not noticed a visible difference between brands. Using the Nero CD/DVD Speed software the Verbatim discs show fewer errors than TDK, Memorex, & GQ brand discs for my burner (Samsung SH-S182M), though.

These days all those Brands are probably made by CMC.

The manufacturer ID for my discs are

    GQ DVD-R - ISSM R02
    TDK DVD-R - RitekF1
    Verbatim DVD-R - MCC 03

    GQ DVD+R - Sony D11
    Memorex DVD+R - MCC 04

Based on the digitalFAQ.com media rating the RitekF1 and ISSM are not good, but I've only had 1 write failure out of 125 discs. From the MCC03 and MCC04 I had 1 write failure out of 100 discs. I don't know if it was a caused by the media or the writing software (Nero 6).

I don't know about long term reliability because the discs were written within the past year. .

just wanted to give a brief update and say thanks. I bought some Verbatim R+. They were on sale an almost half the price of the R-. Plus I could return them if wasn't 100% satisfied. I have burned a couple DVD movies and they work perfectly. It would appear that the crappy Memorex media was the prob all along. Thanks for the advice!

    What do they ID as?

Your original Verb -R's and Memorex +R's both ID as MCC... usually a good thing.

  10. I would warn anyone that GQ "borrows" other manufacturer's ID's. I have a batch of 50 GQ's that ID as TYG02's but they do not even look like a real TYG02 and when burned, they behave like the original poster here described. Playback is with skips and stalls.

another thing that will cause skipping is paper or other type of labels. even on good media. if you have labels on the dvds that skip remove with fingernail polish remover or acitone (sp) or something like that.

i know that your good media helped solve the problem but it will creep back over time with lables..

the issue is that the dvds are off balance and wobble to much for stand alone players to correct.

Indeed media will solve your problem but IMHO the real cause are your players.

The DVDs which skip and jump can probably read and be copied on your PC and will probably play in a cheap commodity DVD player.

thanks for the advice but I do not use DVD's with labels; I just mark on them with a permanent pen.
