  1. This is a weird phenomenon. I usually leave my computer on downloading stuff. Sometimes when I get back to the computer, the monitor screen is black (light turns from green to orange - meaning it is idle) When I move the mouse, it's suppose to go from screensaver back to the desktop. But I notice that sometimes the screen just stays black and doesn't revert back. The computer is still on, but I can't seem to do anything. The only way is the shut the computer off. Its not my screen saver, what else can I try?

check your settings in control panel/power options. make sure everything is set to never power down and that hibernation is not enabled.

  3. Standby mode can also be a problem. I have one computer with an incompatible power supply. If the computer goes into standby the power supply shuts down rather than going into a low power state. It won't switch back on until the hard power switch on the back of the computer is cycled (or the power cord unplugged and plugged back in).

There are lots of reasons a computer might not awaken from standby. Some are related to your standby power settings in Windows and some may be related to your BIOS settings for standby power states. And a USB keyboard or mouse can sometimes be problematic for waking from standby. A PS2 keyboard and mouse may be more reliable.

Try clicking the mouse and the keyboard, then waiting up to a minute or two. Sometimes it may take a while for the computer to wake.

For more ideas, try a Google search for ' can't wake from standby '.

  5. OK, I turned hibernate mode OFF. What is system standby mode?

I download a lot, so I was told that when my system goes into hibernation mode, it does NOT continue downloading. Is that true?

Hibernation saves the existing state of the computer to the hard drive. Then when you start again, the same files can be available. You can't download in standby or hibernate states. Just set your video monitor to shut down (Blank) in ~30 minutes or so and leave the computer on if you want to continue downloading.
