I've been using both -R and +R all of my burning days and I am the first to say that "one is more compatible than the other" is complete horseshit.
Dual Layer on the other hand is a pain in the a$$ no matter flavor you choose. At their price...their success rate just doesn't justify using them.

    IMO

Hi thanks for the reply, well in personal tests I found that DVD-R are compatible on my DVD players, but the DVD+R is not compatible on 2 of them so Id say there is something different in the +R.

DL seems to be a hassle then

The only successful D/L burns on my computer were Verbatim...and they are +R. Back when I experimented for a few weeks with D/L I believe all that were available were +R....there were no -R D/L.
I bought a 10 pack spindle of the Verbatim D/L's about a year ago...and you just reminded me that I own them...

I would go with Verbatim DL plus as it seems to have the highest success rate at present.

You might take a look at this thread regarding DL plus and minus media: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic321943.html#1655397

Are you booktype setting the +R media to DVD-ROM? That should improve player compatibility.

I agree with you to a point. DL is more of a pain that single layer media, but I find myself burning mostly DL discs these days.

I have a pair of NEC 3550A burners and they both burn DL discs quite nicely. These discs have held up so far too. The only time I've created a coaster was when I screwed something up.

I do use Verbatim discs (with a few TDKs sprinkled in that I bought by mistake). I use IMGBurn to burn and the discs even play just fine in all three DVD players I own including the one in our '02 Odyssey. That thing is squirrley as Hell and won't even consider playing a single layer disc (or a burned CD, for that matter). Plays burned DLs just fine though. I haven't found any players yet they won't play in.

At some point, the curse will catch up with me I'm sure, but (knocking on wood) I've had pretty good luck.

If you MUST use DVD-R DL discs, buy Verbatim. I hate the format. My DVD player had serious playback issues with DVD-R DL discs, but it rarely has issues with DVD+R DL discs. DVD-R DL discs must be burned specially (the layer break has to be set completely differently from DVD+R DL discs) and they are a lot more expensive than DVD+R DL discs.

For what it's worth, there are a lot more DVD+R DL success stories than DVD-R DL ones. Most people who say they burn DL discs are buring +R discs because they're a lot easier to find, they're cheaper, and they work better. The -R DL format was kind of force fitted onto DVD-R technology in a rather ugly way and it shows.

You should only use DL-R for data. It has some serious problems when used for video.

That's reallllll good information to know, and I appreciate it. As it happens, all the DLs I've so proudly NOT had any trouble with have been +R DLs, but I didn't know about the issues with -R DLs either.

Suffice it to say I got lucky. 8)

BS, DVD-R DL is as good as DVD+R DL, only the players/standalones decide which format you should choose..........
