How to lower background music

I have DVD of TV shows which seems to have the background music too high, drowning out the dialogue in critical moments of the drama. Is there a way to enhance the dialogue or reduce the background audio?

I've tried the dialogue enhancer on some of the panasonic players, but it did not seem to help.

If the DVD has a 5.1 mix them possibly. If it is stereo then you are pretty much out of luck. You could try using the EQ and other filters in an audio editor, however you will find that any enhancement you make to the dialogue will come at a cost to the overall audio quality.

Are these commercial discs ?

Yes, these are commercial disks of Chinese dramas.
Ironically, these are the official releases of licensed dramas in the US. Often the pirated stuff in rental stores actually have less problems. My mom complains that the stuff she gets at 1/4 - 1/3 the price actually sound better (tho crap vcd level video quality)

The audio is at stereo 2.0, maybe that is why the dialogue enhancers don't work

The dialogue enhancer will most likely be a basic EQ circuit aimed at the average range for spoken dialogue. Assuming that there is little other noise in that range, it will probably work. However if the background noise covers the whole spectrum then it cannot isolate just the dialogue.
