Is it possible to make an AVI using H.264 or x.264 codec?

    Yes,

    http://deaththesheep.uni.cc/

Or if you've already got avc you can use avc2avi on a raw h264 clip.

    look again.
    download installer. install.
use vdubmod. select x264 compressor, configure, encode.
    avc in avi.

take existing h264 clip, extract to raw,
    use avc2avi
    avc in avi

Why would you want to put AVC in an avi file?

avc2avi should run fine under OS X and you can use mp4box or similar to extract the video from mov/mp4.

You can do this easily with SUPER encoder.

Also, you can do this with virtualdub and the unofficiall vfm x264 codec.

    MeGUI also does it.

Except the OP is using a Mac, so those aren't really an option (at least, he ruled them out above).

I wonder if ffmpegx or VisualHub could do it.

Well Super is just a front-end for various OS cli encoders, most of which should run fine on a Mac. mencoder or ffmpeg can encode via x264 to an avi, in fact for mencoder it is the default output format.

    True.

I just happen to encounter a lot of people on both the Windows and Mac side who'd rather not have much to do with CLI/console programs (me being an exception), so I tend to default to suggesting GUI applications first. Have to do something about that.

(That, and I was actually supposed to get some sleep for a change, this morning, not answer forum posts. Never happened. )
