Ok, this just started happening, it never happened before until last night and I have tried everything and looked everywhere but I cant seem to find a resolution. Ok, so when encoding something with XviD in VirtualDub I do a dual-pass encode. On the 2nd pass I enter in my desired bitrate into the appropriate space under the settings (usually something like 953 as I want a 30min episode to come out to 175mb's) My encodes used to come out to somewhere around 175 (between 170 and 180mb's). Now when I encode using the same bitrate it seems that xvid just picks what ever bitrate it wants. Sometimes the final file ends up being 2801 (around 350mb's) or sometimes its 654 (around 100mb's) and I dont know why it is doing this. Can anyone help me?
PS. I have attached a picture of my settings right below:

I don't know about themaster1's recommendations, but those settings are in 'Quality preset>User defined>more>Quantization' when you configure the Xvid codec.

 And welcome to our forums.

ok well i have tried this and it doesnt fix my problem...any other suggestions?

I have seen the Xvid codec get "stuck" in a mode where it doesn't deliver the desired bitrate (it's been a while since I've seen this happen though). Try the following to unstick it:

Press the Load Defaults button and try your 2-pass encode again with the settings you want.

If that doesn't work, uninstall the Xvid codec and resinstall it again.

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run

type in REGEDIT and press OK

From Regedit drill down to the indicated key, right click on XviD and select Delete.
