  1. I'm creating a memorial CD for my late grandmother which I'm going to distribute to over 40 relatives. I've spent a lot of time hunting for rare tracks, making the disc and cover art, etc so I want to make sure my product lasts for as long as possible.

As such, I want to use the best media possible for this CD. I ran out of the TDK CD-Rs I picked up from Costco a while back, and all I have is some old Taiyo Yuden 99 and 90 min CD-Rs from back in the days when I was into authoring SVCDs. These discs are quite buggy and the SVCDs I made from them were either not playable, or would skip. I recently used one of these discs to create a sample CD-R from an original CD, and I found some minor skipping issues on my standalone player.

What CD media should I buy, and where should I buy it from? Will 74 or 80 min Taiyo Yudens be safe? Is TDK really horrible? Perhaps I was duped and received fake TYs. If I recall, I made purchases from allmediaoutlet.com and www.cdrdvdrmedia.com (I'm in the US)

  2. I found these to be as good as I can find. However, Newegg seems to be out at the moment.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817172110

Rima.com has them but for a couple dollars more per hundred.
I write at 8X or 16X even though they claim 52X.
Not a clue how they will work with video.

    Or get from meritline.com, rima.com, shop4tech.com, wherever.

Legit Maxell CD-R is good too, but the Japanese-made discs (not re-branded TY) are getting harder to locate. I would not pay too much for them, they're no better than TY.

Avoid any piece of crap media/brand that says its "archival gold" or whatever. That's a marketing ploy, it's meaningless. Overpriced junk.

  4. TDK CD-Rs ...
    CompUSA for $16/100

  5. Newegg seems to have them back in stock for $26.99 + $6.13 shipping> $33.12
which makes them $5.87 cheaper than supermedia $38.99 even with super's so called free shipping... Plus Newegg ships 3 days delivery.
Hate it when a store advertises free shipping then marks up the retail cost to cover shipping anyway.
    Newegg............$33.12
    Supermedia......$38.99

    See what I mean.

TDK CD-R is all CMC last I checked. Hardly high quality media.

LS, is it you're opinion that the "archival gold" cd's such as Mitsui and Kodak are not as good as TY? Or, they're as good but overpriced.

If the latter, why? I always thought the old Kodak and Mitsuis were highly regarded.

Personally, I use both TY and Mitsui gold (for archiving).

  8. The holographic number on the back of my supposedly Taiyo Yuden CDRs reads 80 PG1185, and the serial etched on the plastic part of the front reads YE 467C0128280 (or that's what I can make of it). Can anyone confirm the authenticity?
