What is a "Large format DVD"?

I'm about to purchase a DVD which is advertised as "Large format". So what is "large format"? Is it the same as "high definition"? Thanks This is the one:

Yes, I guess that it refers to the IMAX production, but I posted to make sure. So, this DVD will visually be of the same quality as a regular DVD movie? I guess also that an IMAX movie has a noticeable quality gap when viewed in an IMAX theatre, not in a home TV...

Yes, but it's from a higher qualty source - a 70mm IMAX film, so it should look very good. Standard movies use 35mm film.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. If you are saying that IMAX looks worse in an IMAX theatre than at home, then I don't think a lot of people would agree with you.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. If you are saying that IMAX looks worse in an IMAX theatre than at home, then I don't think a lot of people would agree with you.

When you say ""it should look very good", you mean not in terms of pixels, because a standard DVD is 720x480, not 1080p or 720p as in HD. And regarding IMAX of course I meant that an IMAX movie played in an IMAX theatre is way better than all the rest, but what I also meant is that an IMAX movie in a standard DVD format is a "downgraded" version, so it will lose the IMAX quality. Still, as you say, and since the source is an IMAX 70mm format production, it should be visually better than a standard DVD with anothoer source.

I wouldn't expect it to be any different from most other dvd's, especially since it's not even in 16:9 format.

Your supposition is wrong, maybe because in South Africe you don't see the kind of releases the US does. Many IMAX films have been released in both BluRay and Windows Media HD, which is 720p WMV, but outside of the USA these may be very hard to find.

Your supposition is wrong, maybe because in South Africe you don't see the kind of releases the US does. Many IMAX films have been released in both BluRay and Windows Media HD, which is 720p WMV, but outside of the USA these may be very hard to find.

I'm not referring to South America if that is what you meant by "South Africe". I was referring to the USA which is the place where I buy this stuff. Check the Amazon link I posted, it's the US release. And it's true that you can find many HD/BlueRay releases today, but you also find many standard releases even in IMAX movies. I guess that this responds to market demand, BlueRay hardware is still expensive to the majority.
