use the freeware app CDmage to extract the files to Bin/Cue, then burn with CDRWIN, or Fireburner.

  3. is there a past version of Nero pre 5.5, or including 5.5 that can melt bin/cue to disc

you can burn a foriegn image, and open the cue sheet. Keep in mind Nero wasn't written to do this, CDRWIN, and Fireburner were.

I have experienced malfunctions in the pregrap area of the sectors when burning Cue/Bin with Nero. This would only effect things like menus, chapters, segments and sequences though. It's best to use the right app for the right procedure. Multi tracked VCD's and SVCD's contain 2 different file formats. An Iso mode1, and mode2xa.

You could also use a CD image mounter like Daemon tools to mount the image, then use Nero to copy CD2CD.

  5. fyi, (S)VCDs are only made up of mode2 XA tracks! of which the first one contains mostly form1 sectors but also form2 ones for realtime data, thus mixed-form; and the following tracks usually are form2 only...

btw, how did you come to the conclusion, that the pre-gaps were broken with nero?

oh, and btw, I can really recommend cdrdao... it hasn't burned any coasters for me, for over a year... but well, your mileage may vary...
(buffering may be more critical with windows)

I was wrong about the Mode1, should of checked. I thought that it would be since I-Author includes an Autorun folder and a VMP.

This is from the I-author images. The first track is in mode2 2056, the second track is in mode2 2332. CDMAGE converts them to 2352.

The IEC62107 specifies a number of 150 empty sectors at the start of each mpeg track. When Nero burns these images it doesn't seem put them there. Resulting in a few seconds cut off here, or there. Or when you want a pause in between tracks it won't pause, it only runs together. That's the only explanation I could think of. Nero has always burnt cue/bin images wrong for me. But CDRWIN and Fireburner never fail.

Does that sound right? Or is there more to it. I know you know because VCDImager can output nrg files. So what's the difference between the 2?

    CDRDAO? Is that for Linux?
What about mpeg encoders for Linux, could you post a link to a page about these?

well, as soon as you add segment items, the first track should become mode2 2332 as well... I guess I-author just tries to be smart and save a few bytes...

to be picky; the 150 sectors are meant to be before the start of each mpeg (holding) track...

have you tried analyzing such a misburned disk with some tool, or maybe reading it back in with cdrwin and compare it to the original bin/cue? I guess that'd be interersting...

as to vcdimager's nrg output experiment (which I'm almost regretting of having spent time with); it creates TAO nrg images... that's not a good thing at all, since proper (S)VCDs are to be made at DAO (TAO means that those 2sec gaps between the tracks are 'burned' with the laser being turned off, but the specs for (S)VCDs require the 150 sectors to have a well defined sector format...) -- so that's why I'll hide that nrg output feature in the future btw... the option will be still there, but it will be undocumented, unless I happen to find out how to create DAO images

    cdrdao: http://www.vcdhelp.com/cdrdao.htm
(it's primarly development platform is linux and other unix variants, but it works on win32 as well)

well as to mpeg encoding, I can recommend mjpegtools, I'm working together with that packages author, and he's aware of SVCD mpeg2 constraints, so you can expect that this package will become very compliant... but well, don't expect to find the full range of tools you know from win32, other than that I don't know of any mpeg encoders capable of producing SVCD usable mpeg streams... but there may well be some others...
