  1. Do you think the US market will see this Pioneer 500gb digital tuner DVD Recorder?

"Pioneer has launched a 500GB HDD recorder in Europe. The DVR-940HX-S is an advanced media centre with integrated digital DVB-T tuner, high-end video processing and scaling to 1080p video format via HDMI.

With one touch recording and copying, it’s extremely easy to use. Download and edit your camcorder footage, rip CDs, and upload photographs and MP3 music. You can even print your photographs via a compatible printer.

You’ll get the best in enhanced picture processing; the DVR-940HX-S incorporates our newly designed VQE10 core video chipset, which enables a scaling option up to 1080p via HDMI. So you’re guaranteed the highest viewing resolution, regardless of the source. The DVR-940HX-S also has an integrated digital DVB-T tuner."

Cool. If it does show up in the U.S. it will have a smaller hard drive and a couple other features removed. That's the way Pioneer has done it in the past. Pioneer has made no announcements that I'm aware of regarding a successor to the 640 and it is possible they plan to stop serving this market. This 940HX-S is encouraging news, though.

  3. Nope I think that the reason all these mfrs have been sitting on the fence is that they have been awaiting the introduction of mpeg4 encoding over atsc/dvb-t. Any box sold now that only works with mpeg2 will be obsolete (ish) when mpeg4 stuff starts to be broadcast. All of this is supposition on my part , due to Sky popping up on freeview, always technical innovators, leading where others cannot/will not follow (Sky+ )

But yeah the 940- is an impressive beast, pending my lottery win, its on the cards for me..
