I've got this AVI (that's poor quality to begin with) and I want to put it on a VCD. I converted it to MPG, but when I did it lost some quality. How can I go about making this the best VCD possible? Nero didn't have the option for SVCD or anything else.

I wonder, would converting it to a VOB and making a dvd be the best option? I was hesitant because I didn't know how it would turn out, and I don't want to waste any dvds.

BTW, Nero also won't let me just add the .avi file. It says it's not supported or something. I forgot, but I just updated DirectX, and I'm working on updating Nero (to version 6.6.1.4 I think).

That's why I'm dealing with this.

I would not use Nero for this.

Tmpgenc Plus is a much better encoder, and does mpeg1 VCD encoding for free forever, and mpeg2 encoding for DVD for two weeks.

If the video is in a poor state to begin with, you might want to try loading it into virtualdubmod or virtualdubmpeg2 and using the MSU Deblocker or Smart deblocker plugin to help tidy it up. You can frameserve the results to tmpgenc for encoding.

You can then use the freeware version of VCDeasy to create VCD.

SPAM can help you to convert AVI to MPEG-1. Ad hoc profiles enable to obtain any desired quality of the output files easily.
