I am confused about the DTS playing capability of my Pioneer DV-393-S DVD player. Can someone help me please? The only way I can hear DTS sound is if I connect a DTS-capable AV receiver to my player?

Yes, you need a receiver with a DTS decoder. There aren't very many DVDs that are DTS, most are DD.

If your DVD player documentation (you did keep it, I hope) says that your player can decode DTS or if you see a DTS logo on the DVD player, then it can decode DTS. If not, you have to have a DTS capable receiver to connect to the player. Many DVD players can't decode DTS (it costs money). If your player costs less than $100, almost certainly it won't be able to decode it and you'll need a receiver.

Greetings,
You may also need to use a digital coaxial or optical connection between your dvd player and receiver. That is how my DTS / DD get transferred from player to receiver for decoding. Not a normal RCA type connection - though it can be used as a poor man's digi coax in a pinch.
Most odd, just did a search on your player and it does not list digi coax or optical out for audio connections to a receiver. Only RCA Phono x2. Also says Virtual Surround Embedded. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on your player will speak up.
Cheers,

You won't find very many DVDs that have DTS audio. Most are DD. Most new receivers that do 5.1-7.1 DD audio will also do DTS.
Amazon's description lists a digital output:

After posting the same basic statement twice, I think we get your point. However, I suppose the accuracy of this statement depends on what "many" means to you and where you live. If you live in the USA and Canada, a decent number of DVDs have DTS audio on them. They are not hard to find. DTS is used sometimes in Hong Kong on premium type DVD releases. It seems to be somewhat less common in Europe in my experience.Originally Posted by samijubal

Go look through DVDs at BB or Hollywood. Maybe 1 in 40 or so is DTS, if even that many. That's probably a quite liberal number, it may be more like twice that high. I rent a lot of DVDs and have for a long time now, very few of them are DTS.
