  1. I used Any Video Converter and it's just not a good program. I have MPGs that need to be reduced to about 350mb and perhaps also hard-encode the subtitles with black boxes/backgrounds so its easier to read. They are also 704x480, so i'd like to be able to change the video dimensions but its not necessary. Is there anything like that?

Adjust the bitrate in any video converter and you can get the size you want. Use a bitrate calculator to get the exact file size.

If that is not possible try freemake video converter. It can also hardcode subs and resize video. But I don't think it can black boxes to the subs though.

  3. hmm- i can use AVC to just resize or convert. but is there a program that could then add black boxes to subs?

That requirement is going be almost impossible to fulfill. I have never seen a conversion program that can do this, but maybe someone here knows of one that can.

  5. You can do it with ass subs , under the BorderStyle option (3=opaque box)

    http://avisynth.org.ru/docs/english/externalfilters/vsfilter.htm

Have a look at aegisub and ass/ssa subs if you want more control and options over subs , but all you do is import your .srt subs, save out .ass subs , change the BorderStyle number to 3 (you can do it with notepad for example) . Many programs that hardsub will accept .ass subs as well

  6. don't understand the vsfilter part. i tried aegisub, opened an .ass file with notepad. BorderStyle and other things around it don't have numbers. do i just make it ",BorderStyle3,"?

  7. Are you starting with srt subs? Just open and save them as .ass subs in aegisub (file=>save subtitles as)

    Open that in notepad

Do you see the string in the "style" row (the 2nd row) ? Each one correpsonds to the 1st "format" row :, eg. name, fontsize etc....

    e.g. name = default
    fontname = arial
    fontszie = 20
    .
    .
    .

Change the number that corresponds to borderstyle

It might look like something this

    Code:
Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, OutlineColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic, Underline, StrikeOut, ScaleX, ScaleY, Spacing, Angle, BorderStyle, Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Encoding

    Style: Default,Arial,20,&H00FFFFFF,&H000000FF,&H00000000,&H00000000,0,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,1,2,2,2,10,10,10,1
The 8th last number corresponds to BorderStyle, change it to 3 (it's underlined below)

    Code:
Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, OutlineColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic, Underline, StrikeOut, ScaleX, ScaleY, Spacing, Angle, BorderStyle, Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Encoding

    Style: Default,Arial,20,&H00FFFFFF,&H000000FF,&H00000000,&H00000000,0,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,3,2,2,2,10,10,10,1

  8. that seems to work but.... Any Video Converter won't recognize the .ass file (no autoload)

  9. not sure, I have't used any video converter before, there might be an option somewhere . Is it in the same directory with the same filename

    e.g.

    file.mpg
    file.ass

but many programs accept .ass subs

    ripbot, xvid4psp, avidemux, megui

You won't be able to do this very easily with srt subs, because they have no formatting or options

  10. wow.... still can't do anything. i'm sorry that it seems like i'm useless. i tried avidemux, and the video options are confusing, i made it crash. ripbot requires too much things, one of which is net 4.0- i have it but i always get errors whenever a program requires it. i also tried freemake, requires net 4.0.

  11. Sorry I'm not up to date on the GUI's, I typically use avisynth (vsfilter with textsub) , and x264

If you don't want to install all those accessory programs like .net , avisynth etc.., you'll need something ffmpeg or mencoder based

How about Tencoder ? There is a portable/usb version available too

  12. still trying. tencoder didn't autoload the subs, and yes theyr'e in the same folder. i got freemake to work but the subs don't have opaque boxes, at least from what i saw in the preview. maybe i'll email the author of avidemux to do it properly.

  13. You might need to install some of those other things and use some programs that are known to work (e.g. ripbot, megui)

or start a new thread asking for a program that doesn't rely on x, y, z , .net etc.... that has .ass support.

  14. tried xvid4psp, it encoded to a 5gb avi video. i really don't know how to choose the correct format in the options.

In order to TEncoder to work with subs, they must have same name as the video.
