For the past few weeks the "look" of the broadcast changed when SuperNova performed. The video almost took on a film look to it. It looked normal during the rest of the broadcast when the contestants were performing with the house band.
I also remember this happening during previous MTV award shows.
I'm kind of curious about how they do this and why.

Just lighting? And then a certain camera is better than the others?Originally Posted by MrSpeed
I wouldn't know directly. I thought Rockstar SuperNova was crap. The judges have some of the hardest rock music on their resume (Metallica, Motley Crue, Guns N Roses), yet here they were, listening to pop-rock, snore-fest grunge-rock, older lighter rock and other wussy crap being sung by contestants. I quit watching the show about 20 minutes into the first episode. It was like bad karaoke night at the local bar, with the same playlist. Or a just-slightly-heavier American Idol. I cannot adequately describe how disappointed I was after being hyped up that those hard rockers were in charge and looking to create their own band. SuperGroup on VH-1 was much better, in contrast.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I don't think so. The entire "look" changed mid show when SuperNova hit the stage. Would switching the cameras into 24P mode change the look ?Just lighting? And then a certain camera is better than the others?
Then you missed the best part when they start to play their original tunes with contestants. It was a total wuss fest. All their own songs sounded like The Hollies or Slade. I'm not knockin those two bands but I did expect something a little harder from those three guys. The judges have some of the hardest rock music on their resume (Metallica, Motley Crue, Guns N Roses), yet here they were, listening to pop-rock, snore-fest grunge-rock, older lighter rock and other wussy crap being sung by contestants. And I used to think Metallica made a mistake letting Jason go. I've changed my mind now, what a puss. Tommy has always dabbled in various things, so I let him off the hook.

There are all sorts of camera and switcher effects that could be dialed in. Do you have any sample clips? Did you look at the SD and HD broadcast to see any difference in the effect?Originally Posted by MrSpeed

The show already had it's finale. I did have about the first 10 minutes of the show still on the HD but no footage of the main band.
I read some article over at tvtechnology.com that pretty much confirmed it was 24p
http://www.tvtechnology.com/features/Tech-Corner/f-RH-24p.shtml
Apparently MTV's Laguna Beach is shot in 24p
Now that I think of it Every Day Italian with Giada De Laurentiis has a very "film" look to it probably because of a 24p camera. What else would you expect from the granddaughter of Dino De Laurentiis -
Most TV series are still shot on 24fps film. More each season are being shot on 24P HDTV (HDCAM / DVCPRO Varicam).Originally Posted by MrSpeed
"Every Day Italian with Giada De Laurentis" was the first Food Network show using single camera "film" technique in 480p/24 video. They cheated a bit with PD-170's in the ceiling for the stove and counter shots. The studio shows are mostly done multicamera 480i/29.97 but Food Network now has some HDTV capability. Conversion is underway but the big shows like Emeril will be shot in a 1080i/29.97 multi-camera studio.
All this was detailed on a Food Network behind the scenes show earlier this year.
Live shows are usually done in 1080i/29.97 or 720p/59.94 (ABC/FOX/ESPN) but preshot segments might have been done in 24p. 24p is almost never used live. -
I happen to have this and previous episode on a PVR and have to admit it was shot very dynamically, lots of overexposed shots, color bleeds, light diffusion combined with nice camera work (angles). I wouldn't be able to tell if that was 24p. It rather looked like a work of quite skilled digital effects console operator.

24p would look studdered on fast pans or zooms (like film does). That is why 24p isn't used live and why film technique avoids pans and zooms except in a controlled way.

... then the verdict is: it's not 24p !!! (very dynamic and smooooth).
Seems 24p or similar buzz-words pop up too often in whatever context... maybe because ppl think its like aspirin, do-it-all remedy, good for everything and everyone...
