hello, this is in steps, how i convert a divx to dvd:
1. run virtualdub to join avis if needed and to separate audio from video
2. run ffmpeg to transform the audio to ac3
3. with avisynth installed, run fitcd to creeat an avs file for video resizing
4. run bitratecalc to calculate the right bitrate
5. run mianconcept encoder and load the avs file to convert video di .mpv
6. combine the .mpv and the .ac3 in dvdauthor to get dvd files
7. burn on dvd-r using nero
with this method, my dvd's on a sony player sometimes stop and go on error while looking at the video. while if i do the conversion using my friends nero vision, the dvd's are always perfect. Why? am i doing something wrong? should i change some tools? i don't want to buy the nero vision, so i would like to do it myself using freeware tools. Can someone please help?
Thanks

I would start by using a better DVD Video burning application that Nero - try imgburn2 for free, or Prassi ONES for payware.
I would also look at the media you are using, as often this type of behaviour can be traced back to dubious quality discs.
What media are you using ?
Also, do you test before you burn ? If so, does everything play back correctly from the HDD ?
Do y0u test after you burn ?
Do the same discs exhibit problems on other players ? Sony players can be very fussy about what they will and will not play.Read my blog here.

ok, i'll tru imgburn
>What media are you using ?
Memorex DVD-R
>Also, do you test before you burn ? If so, does everything play back correctly from the HDD ?
yes, i'm using vlc to test the .vob files
>Do y0u test after you burn ?
directly on the dvd player
>Do the same discs exhibit problems on other players ?
no they don't. thats why i'm trying to find the right tools to burn the dvds in the way sony likes it
also... i'm i doing it the right way? should i use other tools? maybe cce instead of mainconcept? or another tools instaed of dvdauthor?
thanks -
Testing the VOB files with VLC possibly isn't the best test. Something like PowerDVD or perhaps even Media Player Classic would be a better option.
Otherwise, most of what you have here is valid. I would start by burning a test disc with imgburn2. If the sony doesn't like it, change media. Verbatim or TY are recommended by most here. memorex as a brand use a lot of different suppliers. A lot of memorex is CMC, which doesn't have a great rep. Neither do Princo or Prodisc. Ritek used to be respected, but not so any more. You need to get the media code for the discs you are using and search in the Media section of this site to see exactly what you have, and what others are experiencing from it.
You can also search for your DVD player by model number, and see what discs people are having good or bad luck with.Read my blog here.

To see whether it's your disks that are the problem, try cloning a known-good single-layer disk, make an ISO and burn that. If you use Nero, check the "verify" option when burning.
I have a couple of DVDRWs I use for testing files, seeing if video quality is acceptable; if a menu is readable. Though after 50 or so burns and moving back and forward from PC to player (and dropping a few times) they're getting rather scratched up.
