  1. Hi all...

On my previous Windows2000 install, my DV AVI files played back perfectly without a glitch. But now something strange is happening: Every time I open a file (say, an avi, or a simple .txt file with notepad) my HD gets accessed for about a second, exactly 5 seconds after I open the file.

This is particularly annoying when playing back AVI files.. there is always a little "stutter" 5 seconds into the playback. I just realized now that it is a system wide glitch I have, as ANY file, like .txt files, when opened cause my HD light to go on, exactly 5 seconds after the file is opened.

I've done a full virus scan, and checked my disks for errors. Does anyone have a clue as to what might be causing this???

    Thanks in advance.......

You mentioned you did a virus scan. Could it be that you have a anti-virus program running in the background that you have defined to check every file "when opened"?

  3. No, nothing was running in the background - I don't have it configured as such. I just started the disk scan and found no viruses. I'm beginning to suspect hidden spyware on my system, or something strange with Win2K SP2.

Time for an ad-aware scan :-]

Well I can't think of anything else as I don't use Win2k (yet). Perhaps someone else knows about this weird behaviour. If you have the time and the inclination you could always reload win2k and all the rest which should take care of anything "unwanted" on your system.
