AVI and MPG do not play anymore

Hello- first post here, but I've searched through the guides and have not found a solution.

Don't ask me how, but many of the DirectShow filters on our computer were not unregistered, but there merit values were changed to the point where I can no longer play mpg files in Media Player, Real player, or pretty much anything else (only Sony's Vegas works). Some AVI files play- some don't.

My question is whether there is a fairly painless program or method to reset all the merits and register all of the correct default filters so that I'm able to play video again. It was working before this happened, and it stopped immediately after the merit values were changed, so I know that it is a direct result of this.
