  1. Hi, I would really love some advice as to which DVD burner I should get. The Que! QPS DVD burner is only $350 at CompUSA (after rebate) and I was thinking about getting it. The Pioneer DVR-A03 is about $100 more online. I cannot find a review of the QPS anywhere and the only things that worry me from the specs are the 1MB buffer and the 1x write (but the 1MB should be fine for only 1x, right?). The Pioneer has a 2MB buffer and 2x write. Does anyone have the QPS? Can anyone give me some advice as to which one is better at the price? Thanks

  2. As I understand it, this DVD burner cannot burn DVD-RW discs. It can only burn DVD-R and DVD-RAM. Assuming you are focusing on video (since the question is here) that means you can only burn DVD-R video discs for your DVD video player. That means trial-and-error will cost you a DVD-R each time you try a new encoder, menu configuration, etc. For my money, that's pretty useless. I want the ability to record to a rewritable media so I can try things out until I get it right without wasting money. I've heard you can get DVD-Rs for $3 a piece, but $7 is as cheap as I've personally seen. $100 will buy you about 14 DVD-Rs at $7 a piece. I know I've tried a bunch more than this in CD-RWs working with VCD and SVCD, so the price difference to the Pioneer would be worth it (unfortunately I still need about another $150 price drop ).

  3. As I understand it, DVD-RWs cannot play in most DVD players. I know that Pioneer players can play them but I don't think my Daewoo can. Unless you mean making a DVD-RW and testing it with the DVR-A03 drive on my computer? Would that work?

  5. The claim is that "most" recent DVD players will play DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW (by their respective proponents). But the point isn't whether DVD-RW is playable by other DVD players, but whether it is playable by yours, so you can do the testing. Once you have a "golden master," you can burn it to DVD-R for storage and if you think that will gain you more compatibility.

As for the compatibility, obviously, you can check out what the database here says, but I also found a couple of other sites:

    http://www.meritline.com/dvdchart.html

It lists 87 players (most Pioneer)

    DVD-R will play on 69 of the 87 (79%).
    DVD-RW will play on 58 of the 87 (67%).

    http://www.labdv.com/en/hardware/dvd_player.php

There are 439 DVD players, although not all of them have been tested with all the formats.

DVD-R will play on 201 of the 305 tested (66%).
DVD-RW will play on 4 of the 6 tested (66%).
(DVD+RW will play on 190 of the 190 tested (100%).)
