  1. Hello,

I'm running Win2000 and can play all media files except RM files. I've tried the free RM Player and Media Player classic. The RM files begin to play but then freeze after perhaps 5 seconds. The time counter does not progress and the slider control does not progress. If I drag the slider/progress bar forward the file will start again at the point it is released but will stop after a few seconds. Both players act exactly the same.

Is this a codec problem? Can I remove the codec and then reinstall it. How would I do that?

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

MPC simply uses real players codecs.

You could try mplayer. Still makes use of reals decoders though, well other than for non proprietary stuff.

Real Alternative is just Media Player Classic with the RM codecs.

This is for XP, but W2000 should be the same. It sounds like a codec problem. If you go to 'Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Hardware > (Bottom of the list) Video Codecs > Properties > Properties' and remove any and all RM codecs then reinstall, it may solve your problem.

I've never been a fan of RM files, and I would definitely recommend against 'Real One player' as it seems to want to take over the video system. Uninstall it and just use MPC with the RM codecs. It works well without all the baggage of Real One.

Well I have real player installed just for the codecs and it behaves quite well. You wouldn't even know that it was installed.

Anything that decodes real media has to use real's codecs since for RV9, etc. they aer the only ones that exist. Other decoders can be used for old real video, AC3 and aac audio though.

I have heard of issues with real alternative and player, so make sure that one is properly uninstalled before installing the other.
