    ok so i got this guy on monday, was very satisfied, did some great captures with it, and now suddenly when i play ANY tape it does this:

    http://nate.metroid2002.com/uber_dead.avi (divx)

    the change in audio level is reflected on the level monitor on the front of the unit. it's definitely the vcr doing it. same picture from s-video and composite.

    tried plugging it into a different outlet - no effect.

    time to call up j&r and ask for a replacement?

    That looks like the heads were getting dirty,the hifi heads suffer dropouts from this,i wouldnt worry about this if the tapes are in good condition,all it takes is a few flakes of tape oxide to clog heads.
