  1. I am trying to edit some mpg files to remove commercials. Thought I had the problem solved with Womble MVW; then discovered that each clip I made would play normally for about 10 seconds, then begin jumping like a film that had jumped it's sprocket. My trial expired before I could resolve the problem. Does someone know of a fix, or an alternative program?
I have tried on 2 PCs: both Win98, one XP2400/ 1 GB ram, the other XP1700/768 MB ram. The faster machine can run in XP (if necessary).
All suggestions will be considered. TIA.

IMHO, Womble MPEG VCR works a bit better than MVW. My biggest gripe with MVW is that they removed the "in-between" cutter, so you have to compile individual clips on the timeline.

Also, what version of the program are you using? What is the source? Some sources (such as PowerVCR) are problematic.

I have no reason to believe that they use different encoders. Both are excellent MPEG2 tools. "In-between" cutting is done in wizard by splitting a clip in the timeline and moving (sliding) the end of left and beginning or right clip right in the timeline. Once done move the right clip to the left to eliminate the gap (all covered in the manual). Extremely easy and joy to use.

  6. I downloaded both programs from the Womble site about 6 months ago and subsequently tried to use them on 3 different computers. I could import and play files, but never successfully edited any. My notes on MPEG2VCR show that a saved clip gave a strange error: "Loop-all 0:0000". The clip would not play. MVW2003 seemed to work, but when I trimmed and saved a clip, the saved clip never ran more than 20 seconds before "jumping".

I can no longer open the program to check version #, etc, but with no alternatives in sight, I may purchase the program anyway and keep trying.
I was hoping someone here might recognize my problem and know how to keep things from going so terribly wrong. Oh, well.....

  7. Some have suggested video redo which has a free trial. I haven't used it.

You can try the following free tools.
First demux your files with projectx, after that edit with the mpeg2schnitt program.
Works great for me, I use it always to cut out the commercials from DVB streams.
