Problem: I continue to get the same error message over and over from WinDVD Creator 2 in a seemingly random manner. The message is "Please verify the video source is connected". I get this message when I capture to both hard disk and directly to DVD. I have tried different recording formats and it doesn't seem to matter. The picture and sound are working fine when out of the blue the error pops up. (I am recording from my old Canon Canovision 8mm camcorder that I bought in 1987.) Of course, the error message kills the capture at that point and I have to restart. I have downloaded all of the patches and updates for the both the ConvertX driver and the WinDVD software. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Setup:
P4 3.0 ghz
1 gig RAM
Western Digital 72 GB 10,000 RPM SATA Hard drive
Plextor ConvertX PX-M402U driver 2.0.2.2
connected at USB 2.0
Plextor PX-712A CD\DVD writer
InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2 Version 2.0B014.517CA6
Windows XP SP2 -- latest updates installed

I use the same cap device but with a AMD 2500+ and 7000 rpm WD IDE drives. The other differene is I use a vcr for most of my input.
I haven't had many problems after updating drivers and Intervideo s/w (occasional hang with Intervideo junk)
Here's a thought- Have you tried using the Plextor GoCap tool for capturing instead of WinDvd ? This tool works quite well without the overhead that WinDvd has. I have captured footage from a Sharp Hi8 cam but it's a 1999 model. Not as old as yours.
Also, if you do have a capture that gets interrupted by s/w hang or the like you could start a new cap at near the point you stopped the 1st one and hopefully finish the cap. Then join the files together in a program like Womble-mpegVCR. A very easy frame accurate editor that won't lose sync and won't re-encode when saving the newly joined files. I've had to this very thing on more than one occassion. Because of the frame accuracy of cuts/splices the results are unnoticable.
As far as your problem goes I can only think of a couple things- Your camcorder has power issues. Or your it's the usb bus. Are you using the primary usb ports ? (the ones next to the keyboard/mouse connectors) I'm not sure where but I did read this suggesstion about usb. Seems that these primary ports can make a difference in some usb operations for the better. -

Hope this help.
You can use "go capture" or VirtualDub to do the capture too. FYI.
